Copiers, Scanners & MFPs - MFP Security

A recent report from CBS news "Digital Photocopiers Loaded With Secrets" demonstrated the vulnerability of modern printers to information retrieval. Most large printers, since 2002, contain physical hard drives used to queue up items to be printed, scanned, copied, faxed and e-mailed by the machine. In an experiment conducted by CBS News and security company Digital Copier Security, four used printers were purchased and inspected.

The four printers contained thousands of documents including detailed criminal records from a machine previously owned by a police department, hundreds of medical records from a health insurance provider, and pay stubs with names, addresses and social security numbers from a New York construction company.

All-in-one printers, which contain flash RAM instead of hard drives are also prone to this, a tech analyst recently retrieved the fax queue of a used HP all-in-one printer and retrieved copies of signed job offers, relocation documents, and mortgage documents among other items. View Article
